Connecting Europe Across Borders
5G Corridors
The deployment of 5G cross-border corridors across Europe holds immense promise for the green and digital transformation of the EU economy and society. These corridors, particularly when integrated with Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM), serve as crucial enablers for:
Recognizing the importance of 5G corridors, the European Commission has included them in both the Digital Decade Strategy and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy. Also they have become a strategic focus of investment within the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The GUIDE CSA supports the deployment and uptake of 5G infrastructure along key transport routes, enhancing services in cross-border corridors. This project will heighten awareness of 5G’s benefits, ensuring seamless connectivity across European transport networks, thus fulfilling the 5G objectives outlined in the Digital Decade Policy Programme.
5G Smart Communities
5G Connectivity is poised to enhance digital services at the local level, playing a pivotal role in fostering economic recovery and social unity. In smart communities, 5G will modernize key socio-economic sectors—healthcare, education, public administration, and transport—making them more efficient and robust.
With its promise of high-speed data transfer, low latency, extensive coverage, and reliable networks, 5G is set to amplify the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT), adding significant value to connected objects within cloud ecosystems.
The European Commission’s CEF Digital initiative has launched three calls, with the latest focusing on practical 5G applications. These selected projects will showcase 5G’s potential, encouraging the development of future 5G applications across various sectors.
A dedicated Coordination and Support Action aims to establish a repository of exemplary 5G use cases, serving as benchmarks for innovation under various EU funding programs.
The 5G for Smart Communities (5GSC) initiative supports the deployment and uptake of 5G, enhancing services in local communities. This initiative will heighten awareness of 5G’s benefits, ensuring all populated areas in Europe are connected, thus fulfilling the 5G objectives outlined in the Digital Decade Policy Programme.
