Strengthening
EU Connections

For an Interconnected European Digital Landscape

Project Overview

What is the 5GMEC4EU Project about?

What is the 5GMEC4EU Project?

In the modern digital era, the integration of 5G technologies with the “Connected Collaborative Computing” (3C) network, especially through 5G Corridors and Smart Communities, is poised to transform communication and mobility. Especially the integration of MEC (Multi-Access Edge Computing) is essential for developing innovative services that ensure seamless functionality across Europe, requiring robust, interconnected infrastructures and a coordinated approach that strengthens the European supply chain.

The primary goal of this initiative is to foster and support the practical applications of 3C across various sectors, utilizing 5G, edge, and cloud technologies, with particular emphasis on the development of 5G edge cloud services. A crucial focus is on ensuring cross-border functionality and enhancing the development of 5G Corridors to guarantee continuous and reliable 5G services throughout Europe.

Specifically, this initiative will facilitate, coordinate, and support foundational efforts for projects from CEF Digital. These projects are critical in developing proofs of concept, testing environments, and pilot scenarios for 5G Corridors and Smart Community applications. This collaboration aims to standardize technologies and foster an open-source architecture, driven by industry-led use cases, to ensure that solutions are both innovative and practical.

To achieve these objectives, the initiative will engage a diverse group of stakeholders, including mobile network operators, infrastructure providers, and technology firms. We aim to align these parties on common standards for edge cloud technologies, enhancing collaboration across the digital and mobility ecosystems. This collaborative effort will include workshops and symposiums to synchronize efforts around European federated cloud infrastructures, promoting an open-source approach that integrates the needs and innovations of the industry.

By setting the necessary technical and operational frameworks, this initiative not only aims to expedite the development of advanced 3C services but also to enhance the competitiveness of the European digital supply chain. The broader implications include improved connectivity, intelligent and efficient mobility solutions, and the creation of a cohesive European digital space where technologies integrate smoothly across borders, underpinned by standardized and open-source technology platforms.

The project scope of 5GMEC4EU contains a vertical approach covering three levels of activity and connecting the dots of MEC relevant Use Cases.
